The project intends to apply robust scientific methodology for development of the maritime activities balanced with the marine environment. In this context, PLASMAR purposes include the development and implementation of standard environmental impact assessment standards for each of the studied maritime sector (aquaculture, blue energy, maritime transport, etc).
Within the scope of the project, OOM-ARDITI is looking for Marine Biologist (graduate level or equivalent) with expertise in scientific scuba diving and underwater sampling. Knowledge on macrobentic communities is expected. The candidate is expected to develop and optimize tools for marine environmental monitoring. Benthic, visual and chemical surveys will contribute as well to evaluate environmental descriptors for the aquaculture industry. Surveys are expected to assess biological and physico-chemical impact of existing operations on the seabed or the potential for the location of new farm sites. Chosen indicators should be statistically robust and have a quantitative threshold level or a range of values; should be cost-efficient and of good repeatability and confidence. The successful candidate will join the aquaculture research group, an interdisciplinary team with the following research topics: aquaculture species diversification, multitrophic integrated aquaculture, environmental impact of aquaculture; marine spatial planning. Responsibilities include:
The ideal candidate will have a Degree in Marine Biology (or other related field), with experience in the following areas:
The work will be coordinated by Carlos Andrade (PhD) and Natacha Nogueira (Msc.) at the Mariculture Centre of Calheta – Madeira Fisheries Directorate, in Madeira Island (Portugal).
