Job summary: Research Grant (BI) for Biology, Assessment and management of littoral fishery resources |
Job description: The study of the basic biology, distribution, population dynamics and stock assessment of the gastropod molluscs, exploited in the Archipelago of Madeira, it is the basis for the management of its fishery in order to achieve a sustainable exploitation based in the maximum sustainable yield, as it is established under the framework of the Common Fisheries Policy. In the scope of this study we are looking for a biologist (Master level) with expertise in population dynamics and stock assessment of littoral resources. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and will lead the transition from actual yield per recruit models used to assess this resource in the Madeira Archipelago to a broader approach using production and analytical models to estimate MSY and FMSY of the two exploited species of limpets (Patella aspera and P. candei) and make a first study of the basic biology, distribution and abundance of sea snails (Phorcus sauciatus) in the archipelago. An analysis of a time series of landings and fishing effort, based in data available from the DRP databases (sales notes inquiries and logbooks) will also be used to analyse standardized series of landings-per-unit-effort using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). This study will be accomplished in the framework of project (M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000001-Observatório Oceânico da Madeira-OOM).
The ideal candidate will have a M.Sc. Degree in Biology (or other related field), with work experience in fishery resources;
The work will be coordinated by MSc João Delgado and conducted in the Regional Directorate of Fisheries of Madeira/Investigation Service Duration 1 year, renewable up to 36 months. Salary The monthly maintenance stipend for "Bolsa de Investigação (BI): Msc" (980€) and regulations are determined by ‘FCT-Fundação para a Ciência Tecnologia’ (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). Evaluation criteria The following evaluation criteria will be applied: FS = QA + EP FS – Final Score QA – Qualifications EP – Experience QA: 5 points – MSc in Biology (or related field of study) EP: 3 points - Experience in studying littoral resources (1.0: No experience; 2.0: Less than 2 years; 3.0: More than 2 years); 3 points - Experience in the application of population dynamic methods (1.0: No experience; 2.0: Less than 2 years; 3.0: More than 2 years); 3 points - Experience in using assessment models (1.0: No experience; 2.0: Less than 2 years; 3.0: More than 2 years); 2 points - Experience in field work (fishing surveys) (0.0: No experience; 1.0: Less than 2 years; 2.0: More than 2 years); 2 points - Prior publications in peer reviewed international journals, in littoral resources (e.g. limpets and snails) (proven through publications: 0.5 for each publication to a maximum of +2 values); 1 point - Prior publications in peer reviewed international journals (proven through publications: 0.5 for each publication to a maximum of +1 value); 1 point – Some experience in the use of the R software environment for statistical analysis (proven through training course(s) certificate(s)).
