Job summary:

The Ocean Observatory Madeira opens a Research Grant (BI) at post-doctoral level, within the project MARPOCS - Multinational Response and Preparedness to Oil and Chemical Spills.

Job description:

MARPOCS - Multinational Response and Preparedness to Oil and Chemical Spills, is a EU funded project (2015/PREP/08), which promotes the sharing, and development of a common operational framework and model-based decision support tools for oil and HNS spills. An international effort will ensure an effective and holistic way to strengthen the capacity for mutual assistance and to improve preparedness and response to marine accidental pollution episodes.

ARDITI, through the Oceanic Observatory of Madeira (OOM) is an active partner in MARPOCS, responsible for the improvement of an ocean circulation forecasting system focused on the Madeira Economic Exclusive Zone (ZEE).

In the scope of MARPOCS, OOM-ARDITI is looking for Coastal Ocean Modeler (Post-doctoral level) with expertise in Data Assimilation. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team, and will lead the transition of the hydrodynamic model of the Madeira Archipelago to an Operational Forecast System (OFS), based on a Data Assimilation framework.

Responsibilities include:
•    Identify a suitable Data Assimilation interface to integrate with the Madeira meteo-oceanographic Forecasting system;
•    Verify the software implementation of the Data Assimilation interface with ROMS through hindcast simulations and comparisons with previous modeling results;
•    Complete a skill assessment of DA-ROMS model hindcast results;
•    Complete a skill assessment report on the performance of the DA-ROMS model during the hindcast;
•    If the DA-ROMS meets skill assessment criteria and is approved, assist with the transition of the model into the Madeira Island Meteo-oceanographic Forecasting system;
•    Study feasibility of DA for providing generic on-demand oil, chemical and inert spills simulations;

Admission Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a PhD Degree in computational geosciences or physical oceanography or physics or mathematics, (or other related field), with work experience in ocean modeling;

•    Demonstrate experience in setting up and running computer models. Hands-on experience using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is preferred;
•    Knowledge of FORTRAN 95, 2003, and 2008;
•    Experience working in a LINUX based environment;
•    Experience in using Matlab, Octave or Python;
•    Familiarity with science data formats, in particular NetCDF.
•    Experience on Data Assimilation, Kalman Filtering techniques. Knowledge on DART or OpenDA is a plus.
•    Prior experience in catastrophe modeling, vulnerability and risk quantification is an advantage.
•    Strong communication and collaboration skills.
•    Demonstrated strong ability to work independently in a self-directed environment.

Workplan

•    Perform literature review and analyze historical event data related to catastrophe modeling.
•    Manipulate client datasets, interpret model results & quantify associated risk using a variety of database, GIS & programming tools.
•    Participate in model reviews, document model methodologies & provide technical report.

Scientific guidance and workplace

The work will be coordinated by Dr. Rui Caldeira

Duration

1 year, renewable up to 2 years.

Salary

The monthly maintenance stipend for "Bolsa de Investigação (BI): Doutor" is determined by ‘FCT-Fundação para a Ciência Tecnologia’ (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en).

Evaluation criteria

The following evaluation criteria will be applied:
FS = QA + EP
FS – Final Score
QA – Qualifications
EP – Experience

QA:
•    5 points – PhD in Computational Geoscience (or related field of study)
EP:
•    3 points  - Experience in running ocean circulation models in HPC environments;
•    2 points - Experience with the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS);
•    3 points - Experience in FORTRAN programing language;
•    2 points - Experience in scripting languages such as MATLAB / OCTAVE or Python;
•    3 points - Experience on Data Assimilation, Kalman Filtering techniques;
•    1 point - Experience with DART or OpenDA;
•    1 point - Prior experience in catastrophe modeling, vulnerability and risk quantification.
