Job Description:
The work will be developed within the scope of the INTERREG Atlantic Area project AQUAFISH0.0 - Aquaculture & Fisheries 0.0 - Improving the acceptance and social awareness in the consumption of sustainable marine food products developed under the zero-waste philosophy, with the reference EAPA_0062/2022. This project will promote social acceptance and raise awareness among consumers and producers on the need to implement policies that reduce food losses and waste under the ‘zero waste’ philosophy, based on a Quadruple Helice (QH) approach. Three main action lines will be carried out in the project:
1- R&D: development of innovative food products from bycatch and by-products;
2- Promote the best possible scenario for the updating of the administrative and institutional framework for the development of these new products;
3 -Public awareness regarding the circular economy approach in the field of marine living resources, for both consumption and waste reduction (special focus on next generations).
The successful applicant will collaborate in AQUAFISH0.0 activities work, mainly on the action line 3 - “Public awareness regarding the circular economy approach in the field of marine living resources, for both consumption and waste reduction (special focus on next generations).” Specifically, the collaborator will be responsible for:
- Developing partnerships and contacts with the educational, scientific, enterprise and catering sector as well as to prepare and implement educational and science communication activities, such as talks, seminars and podcasts, about aquaculture and fisheries related issues, for diverse publics, mainly from Madeira archipelago. It includes to create, autonomously or in collaboration with other partners, resources like PowerPoint presentations, videos, didactic games and/or other suitable materials and tools.
- Organizing a masterclass/workshop to professionals from kitchens of the public and private sector to improve food environments for healthy and sustainable cooking.
- Organizing a recipe contest for students from Madeiran archipelago schools to promote consumption of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries’ low-valued or underused products.
- Collecting information to update and improve the mobile application MadeiraFish (to produce a version focused on informing people about sustainable seafood consumption).
- Producing project reports.
- Participating in relevant training and events of the project.
- Collaborating in other tasks of the AQUAFISH 0.0 Project and ARDITI thematic lines.
This work will take place mainly at ARDITI’s offices in Funchal, Madeira Island. Portuguese and English language skills are essential to create content that can be used locally and internationally. In addition, the successful applicant should be able to demonstrate proficiency in self-led work, as this role requires a lot of self-motivation, creativity and time management to be able to come up with and deliver finished work without constant oversight.
Candidates must meet the following requirements, skills, and competencies:
- A bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Sciences or similar areas
- Enrolled in a master’s degree in Aquaculture, Marine Resources, Biology or a similar area
- Portuguese language skills
- English language skills
- Experience in science communication and outreach
- Proficiency at independent work

The work will be conducted in MARE-Madeira, ARDITI (Funchal, Portugal), under the supervision of Sónia Costa, Carlos Lucas and Carlos Andrade.
Scholarship length:
The scholarship will have a length of 18 months, possibly renewable.
Monthly stipend:
The student will receive a stipend of 990,98 €/month free of taxes.
The fellowship stipend will be paid monthly, through bank wire. Personal accident insurance is included with the fellowship. If desired, the fellowship holder can join the voluntary social insurance scheme (SSV), the payment of which will be borne by the contracting institution.

Selection Process:
The evaluation for applications will be based on the joint assessment of the following criteria (on a scale of 0 to 20):
- Demonstrated experience in relation to the requirements, skills and competencies (60%).
- Demonstrated motivation to work on the project (30%).
- Final average of academic training for a Biology or similar bachelor's degree (10%)
If the jury considers necessary, the top three candidates may be invited for an interview (in person or remotely). The interview assessment is expressed on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 values.
If an interview is carried out, a weighting factor of 60% is assigned to the motivation and curricular assessment grade, and a weighting factor of 40% to the interview grade.
