Madeira’s Regional Agency for the Development of Research Technology and Innovation – ARDITI, is seeking an established researcher (R2) to coordinate and administer the recently (2013) founded Oceanic Observatory of Madeira (OOM).
Incubated as a ‘Research Unit’ inside ARDITI, OOM gathers the participation of 10 Regional Institutions with research activities in Marine Sciences and Technology and congregates the collaboration of over 30-research scientists (incl. 10 PhDs) from the different institutions. Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate and help implement OOM’s strategic plan with other members of the Board of Directors and institutional partners. Lead and coordinate the development of the scientific activities and annual budget. Advise the Board of Directors to refine policies and practices in fund-raising, marketing, public relations, accounting, information systems, and human resources. Play a leading role in raising funds and promote international cooperation. Work with ARDITI accounting and project management departments to maintain and refine procedures for managing and tracking OOM's finances and project deliverables.
Work with OOM’s Public Relations and educational staff to promote the scientific activities of the organization, and help establish educational and training initiatives in Madeira and abroad. Lead the development of human resource programs and policies. Identify staff training needs and coordinate their work tasks whenever appropriate. Participate in research projects in accordance to academic qualifications and areas of expertise. Ensure that OOM’s staff members are aware of their roles and responsibilities, establish and monitor their scientific performance. Plan and facilitate periodic staff meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Advanced university degree (Doctorate or equivalent) in a relevant science discipline, and an international record in conducting multidisciplinary research in Marine Sciences.
Minimum 8 years of experience in management and coordination of multi-institutional research projects.
Experience in the preparation and management of research initiatives funded by EU programs..
A full command of written and spoken English.

The gross annual salary will be Research level-2 (‘Investigator Principal’) is approximately 46,772 euros, (for 2015), and includes social and health benefits.
Initial funds available from 3 years with the possibility of extending to 5 years, depending on the outcome of the performance evaluation.

The ‘Observatório Oceânico da Madeira’ (Oceanic Observatory of Madeira) - OOM aims to develop a permanent scientific infrastructure to monitor the ocean, including data from biogeochemical, oceanographic and meteorological datasets coupled with predictive numerical models. The consolidation of historical data, forecasts and observations in a common platform will enable the local and regional communities to respond more effectively to current and future requirements for the assessment and management of marine resources, enabling adequate development of advanced scientific studies, monitor and mitigate the impacts induced by climate change. Thus, the Madeira Autonomous region will benefit, from services and products offered and produced by OOM, stimulating economic activities, particularly in the exploitation of marine fisheries and aquaculture, renewable energies, geological and mineral exploitation of the seabed, transportation and maritime security, maritime tourism, nautical activities, as well as in the response to pollution events and/or other natural disasters.
