The L'Oréal Portugal Honor Medals for Women in Science are designed to carry out advanced scientific research studies, at the post-doctoral level, in universities or other Portuguese institutions of recognized merit, in the field of Sciences, Engineering, and Technologies for Health or the Environment. This edition aims to encourage research in the area of ​​Climate Change, with priority being given to one of the four “Medals of Honor,” to a research proposal within the scope of the Impact of Climate Change on Health, or on the Environment, which may be considered relevant by the Jury. The National Innovation Agency (ANI) joins, once again, the Altice International Innovation Award (AIIA), through the Born From Knowledge program (BfK). This award aims to enhance the national talent of young entrepreneurs by reinforcing Portugal's position in the development of innovation. ANI will recognize the best project born from knowledge resulting from Research and Development (R&D) activities, with the “Tree of Knowledge” trophy, an art piece by the artist Leonel Moura that rewards distinguished projects by the BfK Awards.

Promove Program was created in 2018 by the ”La Caixa” Foundation with the purpose of stimulating innovative initiatives in strategic areas for the development of border regions in the interior of Portugal, in order to contribute to the sustainable development of these areas. The COFUND scheme aims to stimulate regional, national, or international programs to foster excellence in researchers' training, mobility, and career development, spreading the best practices of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions. This will be achieved by co-funding new or existing regional, national, and international programs to open up to, and provide for, international, intersectoral, and interdisciplinary research training, as well as transnational and cross-sectoral mobility of researchers at all stages of their career.

The European Commission, through its Representation in Portugal, publishes a call for proposals to select partners to operate a EUROPE DIRECT in 2021-2025. EUROPE DIRECT is a space for proactive and continuous dialogue with citizens to promote the European project. By organizing informative and participatory activities, EUROPE DIRECT allows citizens to make informed choices about the future of the EU by fully participating in the European democratic process.

This grant scheme is designed to provide effective support for actions on the ground carried out by local stakeholders. The maximum amount and duration of a project are respectively 40.000€ and 14 months. Eligible organizations can apply for a Project Preparatory Grant, a grant mechanism of 10.000€ which will financially support applicants whose concept notes have been pre-selected in the preparation of their full project proposals.

The Directorate-General for Maritime Policy, as the operator of the Blue Growth Program of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 (EEA Grants), launched Opening Notice for research projects. This call aims to finance projects that improve the performance of Portuguese research organizations within the scope of Blue Growth, including technological development, which promotes the monitoring and better knowledge of issues related to the marine environment, including natural and social capital and services of ecosystems. The funding to be allocated will be 0.5M € to 1M€ per project.

The objective is to develop effective responses and tools to prevent and counter all forms of radicalisation (including in particular Islamist and violent right wing extremism) in priority areas highlighted in the annual Strategic Orientations on a coordinated EU approach to prevention of radicalisation, focusing on approaches for disengagement and reintegration of extremist offenders and radicalised individuals, including on returning foreign terrorist fighters and their families.

This call intends to develop a modular and interoperable solution to enhance situational awareness and operations in the maritime environment through the development of a multi-sensors and scalable capability to detect, classify, track, and identify threats across a wide area of missions, including the ability to counter adversary attempts to use low-observability materials, designs and technologies to escape detection.

Many SMEs struggle to embrace the Industry 4.0 revolution and the uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies and systems remains a challenge: only one in five manufacturing companies have already used advanced manufacturing solutions[1]. A recent study[2] shows that for nearly three-quarters of the firms, the most important barrier to the uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies and systems is the high cost of investments in advanced manufacturing acquisition and the lack of financial resources. About half of all firms also indicate difficulties in assessing the performance and the potential business return of such technologies and/or the lack of skilled personnel required to adopt relevant technologies and business models.

The Directorate-General for Maritime Policy, as an operator of the Blue Growth Program of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 (EEA Grants), launched an opening notice for projects in the area of education and training. This call aims to fund projects that improve skills and competences in marine and maritime affairs through education and training. The funding to be allocated will be € 200,000 to € 250,000 per project.

The Green Deal call will mobilize research and innovation to foster a just and sustainable societal transition aiming at ‘leaving nobody behind’. Projects are expected to deliver tangible and visible results relatively quickly and show how research and innovation can provide concrete solutions for the Green Deal's main priorities. In addition to technological development and demonstration, the call encourages experimentation and social innovation for new ways to engage civil society and empower citizens.

Within the Framework Partnership Agreement[1] in European low-power microprocessor technologies awarded in 2017, the selected consortium will be invited to submit a Research and Innovation Action proposal for the second phase of the design and development of European low-power processors and related technologies for extreme-scale, high-performance big-data, AI and emerging applications, in accordance with the research roadmap defined in the respective FPA.

The present call targets projects on low-carbon technologies and processes in all sectors covered by Directive 2003/87/EC (the EU ETS Directive):

Innovation in low-carbon technologies and processes in sectors listed in Annex I, including environmentally safe carbon capture and utilisation (‘CCU’) that contributes substantially to mitigating climate change,as well as products substituting carbon intensive ones produced in sectors listed in Annex I, environmentally safe capture and geological storage (‘CCS’) of CO2, and innovative renewable energy and energy storage technologies.

EVENTS

September 21-25

The European Commission in collaboration with FETFX organizes the second annual Future Tech Week, which will be held as a virtual event. The event dedicated to the celebration of future and emerging technologies (FET) wants to present the EIC Pathfinder (FET) projects, which set new trends across the scientific, technological, and business sphere and promote the good name of European research. Future Tech Week will propose a range of online sessions focused on high-risk research and innovation, following namely the sustainability and digital policies of the European Commission. The chosen projects and their accomplishments will cover various topics: e.g. artificial intelligence and IT, health and biotechnology, energy and environment, nanotechnology and nanomaterials, or culture and society. This will also be part of the European Union’s flagship research event ‘Research & Innovation Days’, which brings together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and citizens to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond.

The session will offer an insight into the Pathfinder/FET program within Horizon Europe, from a broad perspective with the participation of very relevant panelists.

During the R&I days, in a dedicated session under the European Innovation Council (EIC) Hub, the EIC Pathfinder program will outline how fundamental it is to connect breakthrough research and new technologies to the market for achieving disruptive innovation and the role the EIC will play to facilitate it. The 2020 edition will gather broad input from participants on how research and innovation policy and funding can deliver on the European Green Deal, digitalization, and other priorities. Building on the success of last year’s edition, the 2020 event will feature three days of intensive policy co-designing, thought-provoking panels, and matchmaking opportunities.

In a crucial year, just ahead of the launch of Horizon Europe, the next Research & Innovation program starting in 2021, and an enhanced European Research Area, this event is a unique chance to discuss how research and innovation will benefit the future of Europe.

This online event is oriented to stakeholders interested in learning more about the opportunities that will arise in the Mission Oceans and Regenerated Waters until 2030, at this time to be designed by the European Commission in conjunction with the Mission Board. Registration will open soon.

In the context of the European Week of Regions and Cities, there will be two virtual events with the EU outermost regions.

  • Session “MFF 2021-2027 - Outermost Regions” will be held on October 14 at 12:30 (Brussels time). This session will review opportunities for the outermost regions in various EU programs post 2020.
  • Workshop “Outermost regions: scaling up cooperation" on October 15 at 15:30 (Brussels time). This session will provide an opportunity to discuss outermost regions’ cooperation with their neighbors and how it supports regional growth and integration. Registration.

The event, hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation, South Africa in cooperation with the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, will digitally bring together ocean leaders, policy-makers, youth, researchers, entrepreneurs, academics, civil society, and many inspirational speakers.
