Job description:

The oceanic archipelago of Madeira is located in the warm-temperate waters of the NE Atlantic, standing as a privileged platform to study the pelagic environment. Therefore, ARDITI, through the Oceanic Observatory of Madeira (OOM), included the remote sensing of large marine vertebrates and of the surrounding oceanographic features as one of its main goals.

In the scope of the project OOM (M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000001 - Observatório Oceânico da Madeira-OOM), OOM-ARDITI is looking for a Postdoctoral fellow with expertise in pelagic satellite and data logger telemetry and analysis. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team with experience in biologging of marine birds, pelagic fishes, sea turtles and marine mammals around the archipelago of Madeira. The successful candidate will lead/collaborate in the analysis/publishing of collected data, and will lead and collaborate in joint applications for project funds for instrumentation.

Responsibilities include:

• Collaborate in the design and application of an innovative integrated biotelemetry work program to address question of marine resource usage and conservation in the North Atlantic with special reference to Madeiran waters, using biotelemetry and data-logging methods.
• Collaborate in the analysis and publication of existing data, mainly with the aim of integrating data from various species.
• Collaborate or lead in the application for project funds to implement these studies.

• Demonstrate experience in setting up / programming satellite tags;
• Having worked with different taxonomic groups is preferred;
• Experience in modelling/analysis of biologging data;
• Familiarity with analytical tool/softwares (e.g., R programing);
• Familiarity with telemetry data formats;
• Having raised funds for scientific projects is an advantage;
• Experience in publishing is preferred;
• Prior experience with deploying tags is an advantage.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Demonstrated strong ability to work independently in a self-directed environment.

• Analyze and publish collected biologging data on marine vertebrates deployed in Madeira.
• Correlate biologging data with oceanographic data obtained from remote sensing.
• Provide technical support for programming and deploying tags in marine vertebrates around Madeira.
• Apply for funds/calls in order to obtain instruments (tags).
